I do like to consider myself a fashion girlie to an extent. I feel like at my core I truly am in the sense I have lots of ideas and know how on trends and fashion—but now the money to keep up.
I’ve been saying every summer since high school I was really going to set my fashion game up and the process has been MUCH slower than expected.
I went through a phase in like freshman year of college where honestly my outfits were SO out there, and I was really like bringing concepts and aesthetics but school got extremely rough and so I didn’t have the mental or emotional capacity to curate outfits to the extent of my capabilities unfortunately. Now I don’t think I need to go as extreme as before, but I want to get back to it.
So I’m coming up with a serious plan as to how I’m going to make my wardrobe feel like me than random pieces that sometimes work:
Here’s some of my plans/tips:
SHOP SECOND HAND
So, with this I’m talking Depop, Vestiaire collective, thrift shops stuff like that to find truly unique pieces as better prices. I find some of the most GORGEOUS garments on secondhand websites like Vestiaire and I get so tempted to buy lots and lots of stuff but…I’ve got bills to pay now though.
Tip: TRY ON PIECES AS OUTFITS AT STORES
So the reason why I love this tip I kind of learned from my mom is because I can instantly tell when a piece has potential, but seeing it put together with something just solidifies that. You can try on a shirt alone and go ‘ok that looks good’ but when you try it on as a part of an outfit you see how you can actually make it work with pieces you have/are wearing or planning to get.
SAVE UP FOR DREAM ITEMS
I spend lots of money on random stuff. It’s a problem—but if I save money towards buying the pieces I actually want—dressing up would be much more enjoyable. It gets hard because I have bills as mentioned before so I only have a VERY SMALL amount of disposable income truly, so I tend to just buy cheap stuff immediately instead of waiting for the really good stuff.
Lookbook
So, the vibe I’m going for is unique yet timeless-ish. Like a chic and classy woman who occasionally likes to dance all night in bars then go on matcha walks in the mornings…I want cool pieces from now and earlier times that all go together but also can make quite the statements if styled correctly. I’m fiddling with the idea of a capsule wardrobe to make the daily styling process easier, but I like to shop too much (maybe it’ll help with that though).
Theoretically my idea “capsule” wardrobe would have:
*These aren’t exactly the pieces I want but the vibes definitely. *
Tops
T shirts and tanks
corny but cute^
Button downs (tailored and oversized)
Sweaters
Sweatshirts
Blouses and tops
Bottoms
Jeans (wide leg, bootcut, straight, and baggy)
Slacks/trousers (baggy/oversized and regular wide leg)
skirts (mini, maxi, midi, pleated… you name it)
Shoes
Plain sneakers (black and white)
Statement sneakers
Heels and sandals
Flats, loafers, and mules
Boots
Accessories
Jewelry
Bags (shoulder and totes/small and big)
Scarves (big and small)
Sunglasses
Belts
Miscellaneous
Dresses!!
I want to give off rich, young, and cool auntie/cousin vibes honestly.
I think also having some key colors in mind might help me with shopping and styling as well so the colors I think I’ll focus on (besides black and white) are red, pink, blue, and green as well as metals like silver and gold.
Pics are either from Pinterest, shop websites, or taken myself!
